Then they were back to take out the next tree. There's our New Zealand Elder in the tree... He absolutely loved this service! But they both said this was the best service they've been able to give their entire missions so far. They really like being destructive, I think, and strangely enough really enjoy the physical work as well (I'm not sure I understand that one... ;o) )Tuesday, December 30, 2008
Little bird wonders
The Elders have been coming to do service for us over the last few weeks. We had a few trees that needed to come out, one because it's poisonous, and we can't take that risk with children, and the others because they're aliens, and just no good to have around... I forgot to take a before picture, but here is the evidence of what they cut out the first day.
Then they were back to take out the next tree. There's our New Zealand Elder in the tree... He absolutely loved this service! We had a lot of finches that were using our Port Jackson's as nesting places. We made sure that there were no active nests before we took out the trees (and I really hope they find other trees in our garden for next year, cos it's really nice seeing them) but we saved one of their nests. It's amazing to think that a bird can weave like this, just using a beak and claws. So many people would LOVE to be able to do detailed work like this!
We also have other birds nesting in our garden, so it's really cool in the spring when they're all busy, and then you can also hear some of the baby birds at times. Very special. We are wanting to plant fruit trees in the open space in our garden now. I must say that the garden feels very empty. And you kind of wonder then if it was the right thing to take out the trees... But I know it is for the best. I just hope we don't lose our birds!
