Letter to Richard - 16 September 2013

Dear Richard

Things are getting really hectic now, and aren’t going to be calming down until the end of October, and then we start the Christmas rush… This stage of the year is horrible in some ways, but there are lots of good things to be busy with J

Both Josh and Hannah had their Action Ball demonstrations. Hannah is such a clown, but they both did really well J

Workwise things were very hectic. I was lecturing the first years, which is a great experience, and for the most part things went well. But then my third years also wrote their test on Wednesday evening, so I left dropped off the kids at school in the morning, but then I didn’t get home until 21:00 that evening. So I didn’t see the kids at all that evening L Josh and Hannah were completely fine, but Caleb was confused about going to bed without seeing me. Although half the time he only wants Andrew to be doing things for him, but I guess he just likes to know that I’m here!

One cool thing that happened with the first years… I set up an online form where they can post questions about the lectures for me to answer in the lectures the next day. And one of the first things I got was: "Hey Shelly PLEASE post this. Hey, since first semester I've had a crush on this beautiful girl. Chanel ___ :) Your personality, your smile, your brain, the way you laugh, the way you dress. Everything about you is beautiful. Hope this made your day and enjoy accounting :) Love your lecture crush :"D" I did put it up in the lecture the next day and some people really appreciated it J

But we had some drama at home… We found lice in Josh’s hair on Friday morning… Not a cool experience to then have to be worrying about can he go to school or not, and being paranoid about the rest of us getting lice too… But this episode has passed without too much hassles, and I think we’re in the clear J

And then we got to the weekend… Always hectic! Andrew and Hannah had dentist appointments on Saturday, but Hannah wouldn’t even open her mouth! I managed to get her to sit on my lap in the chair, but she absolutely refused to open her mouth! But hopefully next time she’ll be willing :P

Then in the afternoon Andrew went to the Saturday sessions of stake conference and I took all three kids to a party of one of the girls in Joshua’s class. This was a HUGE party! Somehow most of the kids that came had siblings coming as well. Most parties at this age it’s just 1 parent and the child, but somehow this weekend everyone had a reason that they had to bring the whole family. But there was so much food, and the mom was really great about all these extra kids. So the kids had a good time.
And then for the Sunday session we all went to the CTICC for conference, and it was so cool to be all together! We had well over 1 000 people in attendance, although Rohan will be able to give you a better count. The theme was on hastening the work, and there was a really great spirit! It’s always difficult for me to get a lot out of conference at this stage of my life, but what I did hear was great. And the most special part of me was when all the Primary kids (well not Josh, and a number of others I saw, but a lot of them) and the missionaries all got up to sing “We’ll bring the world His truth (Armies of Heleman)”. Wow, that was powerful and SO moving! The kids sang the first verse, then the missionaries the second, and then the congregation the third. And how appropriate each verse is to the group.

1. We have been born, as Nephi of old,
To goodly parents who love the Lord.
We have been taught, and we understand,
That we must do as the Lord commands.

2. We have been saved for these latter days
To build the kingdom in righteous ways.
We hear the words our prophet declares:
"Let each who's worthy go forth and share."

3. We know his plan, and we will prepare,
Increase our knowledge through study and prayer.
Daily we'll learn until we are called
To take the gospel to all the world.

We are as the army of Helaman.
We have been taught in our youth.
And we will be the Lord's missionaries
To bring the world his truth.

The spirit was SO strong! A really wonderful experience, and it’s just great to also get to see people that we don’t often see. Like I mentioned in my email Susan also came, and it’s been so great to see her at church a few times now J She’s going to be going to work in the States at a resort in the next couple months if all goes according to plan. Very exciting!

We also then had Andrew’s family coming to visit us in the afternoon, and then after they left I was outside with the kids, and somehow Caleb bullied me into taking him to Mom and Dad’s house again… He really loves being there, and doesn’t like to take “No” for an answer! But they’re enjoying their grandchildren I think J And I’m also trying to make sure that they get to see Cindy as much as possible over the next 22 days before she leaves. The house is going to be really empty until you come home! But Mom and Dad are now getting to do things together again in a way that they haven’t been able to do in years, like just going for a walk or an ice cream, or just whatever they feel like doing, really… It’s really nice to see! With Mom’s health improving a bit in some ways, and no more kids in school, it is really making a difference. But you won’t be cramping their style when you come home, don’t worry :P And that’s a long time from now anyway, so we’re all just living life to the fullest wherever we are!

So life marches on, and like I said, things are only going to get more hectic over the next few weeks. I’ve got one week coming up where I’m doing 16 hours of lecturing (compared to a more standard week of 8) so that is going to be insane! But we just keep moving on, and praying for the strength to get through. And Heavenly Father has Never let me down!

Have a good week J

Shelly
