Joshua moments - July 2010

I swear this boy gets cuter every day! How is that possible?!? But I'm sure all parents think that, don't they ;o) Just in case you're wondering how I put all of these things together, my memory is definitely not good enough to be able to just sit and do this. I make notes on my phone during the month of the cute things he does, and then I just put them all together once a month. My main reason for doing this is to help me remember these times which disappear so quickly, and also so that my kids can look back when they're older and see what they were like.

Joshua is an amazingly obedient child for the most part. Don't get me wrong, he has his times of being impossible! But he's generally actually a pleasure. One Tuesday while Andrew was at youth I had the two kids, and Joshua was so good! We went through his whole routine without any complaints, I'd tell him what we had to do next, and off he'd go to do it.

Joshua is really good at sharing. He's always been willing to share his toys and food etc. I don't know how much is being with other children during the day, and how much is his natural temperament, but I'm glad either way. The last few mornings he's even decided to share his cars with Daddy while he's in the shower (most Saturday morning they'll have a shower, which is really just an excuse to play with cars in the water). So Andrew has had a cold blast of air as the shower door gets opened and a little hand gives him a few cars!

We got Joshua a boy baby doll a while ago, more to help identify body parts etc than to play with. It lay forgotten in his toy box, until recently. Now he really likes to have his own baby to hold, and when I rediscovered the bottle that went with it, he was very excited to feed his baby too. Some nights he even likes to go to sleep holding his baby.

But he also loves the real thing ;o)

He has an absolute love for snakes (thankfully not the real kind). The belts of our dressing gowns are snakes, he loves to make snakes from play dough and his favourite thing to play with is the shower pipe, which even moves through the water when the tap is on!

Andrew doesn't wear a tie to work, but after we let him choose Andrew's tie for church one Sunday, for a few days in the following week he wanted to choose a tie for Andrew to wear to work. So Andrew just did it around his neck, and then left it in the car...

He just loves imitating everything he can. His favourite movie right now is The Incredibles, and particularly the robot (which looks a bit like a spider/octopus). He loves spreading his fingers and pretending his hand is a robot. He also likes to make a computer with his one puzzle box. Of course he can also do the real thing... Kids these days...

One of his strange words is "wanted", which actually means "don't want". It's very tricky to know what he actually means sometimes when "wanted" and "want" can sound quite similar!

From having a very "grown-up" way of talking, where he used the correct words for everything, he's now started putting a "-y" at the end of a lot of words. It started with chippies, but now we'll hear about truckies, handies and all sorts of other diminutive objects. But we still talk to him correctly, so I'm sure it will pass soon, and it is normal I guess...

He's started to ask questions. With more frequency I'm hearing "What's this, Mom" (and it usually is Mom for this) and when we were just starting our drive to Fish Hoek a few weeks ago he asked where we were going.

He has a Granny (Powrie) and a Grammy (Herbert) and we were concerned that it would be confusing for him, but "Grammy" was already named by previous grandchildren, so it's going to stay, and my mom wanted to be Granny. But this month he's started talking about "Grammy" and then also mentions Amber, Paige and Sarah, so he's definitely making the association with the correct grandmother!

If we decide that we're going over to see Granny, he'll invariably find one of his toys, or something he's been busy with, and say he wants to "Show Granny", and off it goes with us over the road.

He says music as "meghurt" or something like that, and he'll often ask for music in the car and at home. And if it's practical he'll often start dancing along.

"Little bit" is a common adjective. But it doesn't have it's normal meaning. He'll often say something is a "Little bit big", so it means more "it is". But it's so cute!

Joshua really caught us by surprise when Andrew was reading his George book to him, but at the end of a sentence instead of saying "he said sadly", he just said "he said", and Josh pipes up with "sadly". I hadn't realised that he was starting to learn the words. So I read the whole first page to him, leaving off the last word of each line, and he knew them all! Not always quite the right word, but close enough that that must be what he's hearing. I was also doing it with some rhymes and other books this past week, and he can fill in a lot of the words!

He's decided that Andrew's beard that he has by a Saturday (before shaving for church on Sunday) is grass. He likes to feel the grass on Daddy's chin.

His favourite food is "chicken chips", either baked from frozen at home, or from KFC...

With living over the road from my parents we often are crossing the road and have to be very careful to teach road safety. Thankfully we live in a quiet cul-de-sac, so there aren't many cars, but we've taught Josh to stop at the end of the driveway and check for cars before going over (he'll say "No cars"). He's been doing that for months, but a couple weeks ago I was having to lock the front door, so Josh had gone ahead of me. I could see there were no cars coming, so I thought I'd wait and see what Josh did, instead of calling to him to stop and check like I normally do. And he stopped right on the curb and waited for me to come! And I've done the same a few more times with the same results. I'm so glad he's learnt that lesson quickly! I know it won't be perfect every time, but it's a relief to know that he doesn't generally want to just run into the road!

He's also really enjoying playing with the neighbour kids, who are mostly all older than him, but he likes the company. One of his favourite things is to make a castle on our incomplete wall.

I had out two Christmas baubles for Hannah to look at (she likes shiny stuff). One morning while I was changing Josh's nappy he was holding them and being very quiet. When I looked to see what he was doing he had one in each hand and he was moving them apart, and then together again. He had noticed that you can see them reflected in each other, and he was fascinated watching the reflections getting bigger and smaller. He liked it so much that they had to go with to show Auntie Wendy.

He loves Thomas the Tank Engine, and he's noticing things that look like train tracks, like a zip, or the pattern just inside the car door, and a number of other things. He'll say "Like Thomas", and at first it took me a while to figure out what he was going on about!

Helping Daddy with the pool means a chance to play with Dad's remote controlled boat!

And he also loves to play outside in our funny little flower bed. He uses a spoon to dig, but sometimes it's nice just to chill ;o)

He has a love of prestick... He likes to tow his toy cars if possible. So he's got a tow truck, which works best if the car being towed has a bit of prestick to help keep it on, and he has a big truck with a trailer which also works best with some help. But he loves to just have prestick all the time. I have a painting I did a few years back stuck on the side of our filing cabinet because we never got around to framing it, and the bottom is within his reach. He discovered that there was prestick there, and he gradually whittled it down until there was nothing left!

He's discovering what money is. For a while now, if he's at home, I let him give our maid her money. Because we use credit cards most of the time he won't often get to see us using cash, so I want him to have some understanding of what money is about and for. But he's now started pretending to be shopping, or just pretending to give Andrew and me money, with his fingers all pinched together.

He's figured out how to open the electric windows in Andrew's car (when they're not locked to stop him) and he's decided he likes having his hand out to feel the wind. And he then usually wants us to also put our hands out!

He's finally figured out how to pull a blanket over himself! It's so nice to check on him towards then end of a sleep and see the blanket up!

He wanted to "drive" my car this week, and he very promptly decided that he was driving to Fish Hoek. Guess he likes it there!

He's learnt quite nicely (for his age) how to use a pair of blunt nosed scissors. He can cut paper, and also loves to cut play dough snakes.

One of his favourite things to play with is play dough. He'll often ask to play with it. It's mainly us making things for him, but he likes to cut up snakes, and he really likes to give any animals we make eyes. He also likes to let all of the different people have a pillow to lie on, usually all matching.

So there's my wonderful boy!
