Letter to Richard - 24 March 2013

With my little brother Richard now on his mission to Zimbabwe, and in a constant attempt to get our family history recorded, I am going to add our letters to Richard to my blog to try and complete the picture a bit more fully.

Dear Elder Powrie ;o)

First an exercise in seek and find…

From Joshua:
Dear missionary. I love you

Op/onkhmj fti;,l.,jjjjjjjjgcrrj bglfdrnsgdvgugtvfaopjloplm/;l’’k

I did the prayer in Primary today. I was very brave today when Primary sang “Whenever I hear the song of a bird” in sacrament meeting. Because I was brave, Mommy was brave and went to give her talk.

From Hannah:
I love you. I played with balloons in Nursery today. .

The kids had lots of fun playing on the laptop, with a few arguments ensuing about whose turn it was… But they had fun at least!

Just to let you know that you are definitely being missed by Hannah. A few times each day she’s asked where you are, although it’s become a game now, cos she’s got that little smile on her face when she asks and then looks at you all innocent ;o)

Hi Richard, Andrew here.

Joshua has also been talking about you a lot, he always says that you are at the temple though. I think Shelly told him that is where you are as it is something he understands; but he does know that you will be leaving to go to Zimbabwe soon, though he does not know where Zim is.

Sister Jean was cross with you today as you were supposed to sing prelude music….only jokes….though nothing changes there.

Back to Shelly

I’ve been trying to figure out the best way to send you updates on what we’re doing, and at the same time get my own personal history (aka my blog) going again. So I’ve decided that each week I’ll try and do a post from the previous month, one for each child, and then one for the family. A lot of the detail you’ll probably want to skim read, and you’ll be most interested in the photos of the kids. So just know that I won’t be offended if you don’t read every word, because I am also doing it for my personal history of our family, and for the kids to look back on in years to come.

But in addition we’ll do an email with a message from the kids and what we think will be more relevant for you on your mission.

So I think I’m set ;o)

So what will be uplifting for you that we’ve done over the last few days…

I’ve spent most of the week during my scripture study time preparing a talk and lesson for today. The theme of today’s sacrament meeting was on families, and I gave the final talk based on “Becoming Goodly Parents” by Elder Perry from the October conference. I realised during the intermediate hymn (304 Teach me to walk in the light) how my talk was relevant to children and young adults as well. Children need to accept the teachings and efforts made by their parents, and young adults can be forming habits now that will help them be goodly parents in years to come. So habits like prayer and scripture study, but also how you treat children and other adults will give you practice for how you will treat your own children. So it’s relevant to you too!

My lesson was based on Elder Bednar’s talk “Becoming Converted” which talks about the difference between testimony and conversion, and how important it is to act on our testimonies, otherwise we won’t have the spiritual strength to withstand Satan’s attacks. I was reminded of how we have to actively choose to fortify ourselves, because Satan’s attacks are on-going, and will find any crack in our armour that we allow to develop. So we have to constantly be on our guard.

And while I was driving to church this morning (I was on time ;o) even though no one could come over and help me!) I was listening to the Called to Serve CD and as they sang “Called to serve our King” the spirit witnessed to me that that is truly what you are doing, and Christ truly is our King, although it’s not a name we often use for Him. But I’m so grateful that you have accepted this call!

So that’s the main things to tell you about at this stage, but you’ll get to hear the more day to day stuff in the blog posts I’ll send you.

We love you lots, and hope you’re loving the MTC and learning lots ;o)

Shelly, Andrew, Josh, Hannah and Caleb
